What Really Matters

Hello Readers!

I just finished an amazing book on willpower and it has inspired me to get back on track with my writing. I think the most important aspect of writing is consistency, so I am going to dedicate half an hour everyday to this blog. For now, that will have to suffice, as after a rather nasty kidney infection my energy is quite low. But there you have it! The number one rule is I have to take half an hour a day to write. If in that half hour I do not write that is OK, but I am not allowed to do anything else. I can stare into space or just sit there quietly but that is the extent of it. So without further ado I am going to give this little experiment a shot. It can't hurt and it may just be what I need to jump start my writing again...

Nothing makes you appreciate your health more than having to deal with a health issue. For me it was what started as a rather innocuous bladder infection that progressively got worse and eventually ended up in my kidneys - not fun I tell you!! It has been over a week now and I am finally starting to feel like I am getting a handle on it. During this time my sleep was also affected having to take numerous trips to void my bladder in the middle of the night - I know too much information! But seriously, I had countless hours to lie in bed with my hot water bottle remembering what it felt like to feel normal and healthy. I vowed when I was over this illness, that I would NEVER take my health for granted again. I know we all make well meaning promises to ourselves and before long we are back to our old ways, but this time it is going to be different. I had just small taste of what many people deal with on a daily basis and I tell you it was a big wake up call!

There is nothing so precious in the world as good health and we should treasure it like the finest gold. It really doesn't take much to stay healthy. Add a few more vegetables and fruits to your diet, stay away from fast food except on rare occasions and move a bit more - not rocket science and the benefits are you will be around a lot longer. Hey, if you can't do it for yourself do it for your kids. They need strong healthy parents and caregivers to help get them get to adulthood.

Not too shabby! My half hour is up and I have blogged for the day. See ya tomorrow!

Happy Parenting,

Monicka

Kids, Goals and Confidence :)

The most successful adults that I know are not necessarily those that try hardest with goal-setting, or that read the most motivational books. They are the ones that have an inner CONFIDENCE they WILL get what they strive for.

Every baby is born with his or her own personality, and you can’t MAKE your child be self-confident. But the interactions that you have with your child at a very young age do have a significant impact on his confidence.

From the earliest age possible, try to:

1) Take a GENUINE interest in the events in your child’s life – ask what happened at school or play school, and then REALLY listen. This shows your child that he has worth because he feels worthy of your attention.

2) Offer plenty of praise and encouragement.

3) Praise effort, skills and attributes as well as successes.

4) Show your child that you have confidence in his ability to do for himself by allowing him to perform age-appropriate tasks for himself without you “helping”.

5) Allow your child to make age-appropriate decisions, and then respect them.

Happy Parenting - Have an Awesome Day!!!

"Goal Setting For Children" Planting Positive Thoughts :)

The first time I attempted to grow a garden - I noticed two things rather quickly. One, I am not a gardener :) and two if you let the weeds get out of control, they will soon take over your garden. It is pretty easy to use that analogy when it comes to thoughts too. If you keep letting the negative ones in they will choke out the positive ones PDQ. It is not so much that negative thoughts have that much power as they are quite low on the energy scale, but enough of them piled up day after day it becomes harder and harder to get through the weeds to the flowers. By flowers I mean the good stuff - the wonderful things about YOU and your life.I had to learn that the hard way and I try and teach this lesson to my children on a daily basis, so that they won't have to wait until they are in their forties to have the same AHA moment.

I am attempting to grow a garden again this summer, as it is so nice to have fresh, organic produce, without having to go to a grocery store and pay the exorbitant prices for quality produce. It is also a good opportunity to bond with the kids and we decided it made it a weekend family project. I let my two kids choose a few packages of seeds to sow and put them in charge of keeping the weeds at bay for whichever rows of vegetables they chose to plant. That way I won't get overwhelmed when the weeds start popping up:)   Wishing you all an awesome day from KidsGoals :)

How to Build Your "Childs' Self Esteem" I am Unique :)

Build Your Child's Self Esteem - I'm unique! If you can get the message across to your child that he is special and unique, you will be helping him appreciate the differences between himself and others, and realize that it is everything about him that is special, all his unique characteristics, and he doesn't have to be the same as everyone else in order to be accepted.

Make a game of it sit down with a pen and paper and each write down a big list of the things you can think of that are "special" about each other. For instance, you might write things like:

 Bobby is special because:
 He can ride a two-wheeler
 He is good at drawing
He is kind to his sister
He helps with the chores without grumbling :) etc.

 Bobby might write:

 Mom is special because:
She makes my school lunch every morning
She tells me she loves me every day and gives great hugs!
She is good at reading stories
She likes to spend time with me :)

I am sure you get the gist of it - have fun :)

Just Because :)

When I was in my twenties I was lucky enough to be invited to take part in a pilot program, called the "Contemporary Woman Project. A group of about 20 women all single Moms from all walks of life, got together, along with two counselors and spent a weekend in the woods learning how to build trust after a traumatic event. Most of the women had gone through divorce or some other trial and were having problems getting on with their lives.

Many hours were spent "talking about our feelings" and we also had to work together to make it across a difficult obstacle course and many other challenges. I learned that when I put my mind to it I was actually quite a capable person for I had completely left my comfort zone for a few short days and learned how to rock climb a fifty foot cliff and repel back down. I will never forget the women that I met that weekend. At the end of it we were asked to write little notes about what we thought of each other. I still have those notes and call them my flowers. I read them when I am feeling down and they never fail to cheer me up.

Think about how you could incorporate a similar idea into your children's lives. How pleased your child would feel if he found a short note in his lunchbox saying "Worlds greatest kid" or a note on the bathroom mirror saying "Smile!! Mommy loves you." Use your imagination and I am sure you can come up with something that will put a smile on your child's face. Make it a daily habit to plant flowers of encouragement where your child is sure to find them. They say it is the little things that count and a child never tires of hearing that he or she is loved and important.

Let Your Kids Be Kids :)

My stylist,  had a baby boy a few months ago and was discussing with me all the advice she was getting from other Mothers about the right thing to do for her baby.       She told me because her baby was sitting at six months one lady suggested that she buy a potty for her daughter to sit on to get her used to it early. What is the flipping rush!! Why is everyone in such a hurry for their kids to grow up?  I look at my almost 31- year- old son and my 29- year- old daughter and it seems like only yesterday I was cradling them in my arms. I was so stressed about doing the right thing for them that I did not take the time to really enjoy my children.

I vow that this time I will enjoy every minute with my youngest son. He doesn’t seem like he is in too much of a hurry to grow up and that is just fine with me. He is perfectly happy letting me cuddle him once in awhile.I try not to worry him about what he will face as a young adult.

Makes me wonder why some parents are already planning what college their children will attend when their child is only four- years- old. Plenty of time for that and who is to say that their child will even want to go to college. Are we trying to realize our own dreams through our children? It is just my own humble opinion, but I say let your kids be kids for as long as they can. Enjoy every moment because it will be over in a blink of an eye and you will look back and wonder where did the time go?

How Parents Can Help End Bullying!!!

My twenty-year-old daughter shared some of her writing with me a few weeks ago. This is something that doesn't happen very often as she is a very private person, so I was really honoured when she let me read her daily journal. She had shared with me recently that she was bullied in school when she was a teenager and she was writing in her journal about how the penalty for bullying, cyber or otherwise, should be MUCH more severe. She was bullied in school because of her Asperger's ( an Autism Spectrum Disorder) so she knew first hand how it can make life a living hell for kids of all ages!

It is happening so often these days - so many young people are taking their lives because living has become too difficult and they just can't carry on. I cannot imagine the pain that these poor kids would have had to endure before they got to that point.

I wonder sometimes why the parents are not held accountable also! I have a hard time believing that they are not aware of what their kids are up to and are just choosing to turn a blind eye. After all bullies show CERTAIN characteristics that are pretty obvious, such as a lack of empathy. I am not saying every kid who lacks empathy is a bully, but that in itself should be HUGE red flag and something you as a parent or caregiver should talk to your child about. Empathy is something you CAN teach your child and the younger the better. For ideas on how to teach empathy to your children check out KidsGoals.com and sign up for the free newsletter :)

I will touch more on the importance of empathy in future blogs.

Self Esteem U Can Draw From :)

Yesterday was an awesome day in soccer history for my fifteen-year old son :) The Green team was short players so he volunteered to step in and cover the goalie spot. He has never played that position before, so it was quite a shock to everyone, when this seemingly shy kid, who prefers to be out of the limelight, literally stepped up to the plate.

Well, to make a long story short he did an absolutely brilliant job! He stopped over fifteen shots and The Green Team won the game 3-2! It was also our first win of the season, woo hoo!!! All of his team mates wanted to shake his hand afterwards and the parents and even the referee commented on how amazing he was. It was so great for his self esteem and he literally walked a little taller after that.

We talked about it later that evening and I told him I want you to take this day, revel in it and remember how amazingly -awesome you felt. Revel in it and before you fall asleep tonight live it over and over in your mind. After that store it away in your memory bank, so you can call upon it when you have a day that is not so great - he really liked that idea.

That was my share for the day and something ALL parents and caregivers can teach their children to do too.

Do More For Your Child by Doing Less...

While the title of this blog may seem a bit contrary there is a very good reason I have chosen it. Since I am by nature a nurturer, it is engrained in me to do for others. My family is my life and I want to make sure that they are loved and cared for. I am now starting to realize that maybe this is not such a good thing after all. If I do everything for my children how will they ever learn to do it themselves. While I may think I am doing it out of love, I am in fact, doing my children a great disservice.

How can you help your children become healthy independent adults? One of the most important things you can do is to let them make decisions. Instead of putting out clothes for your child for school every morning let them choose what they want to wear. If they mess up by choosing something inappropriate their peers will let them know big time! If your children are fighting with their siblings, let them deal with it. Instead of rushing in to referee, let them sort it out. Of course you want to stand near by in case it gets violent, but otherwise let them deal with it. It may be difficult at first but you will be pleasantly surprised at the outcome. We can't fight our children's battles when they are adults so let them learn the skills to do it for themselves. The more you allow your children to do on their own, the more capable they will become.

The goal of parenting and part of our mission at KidsGoals is to give your children the tools to become healthy, happy, capable adults - that my friends is the epitome of love :) For more ideas on how to positively parent come by KidsGoals.com and sign up for our free newsletter!

"Stress Relief 101"

Did you ever notice that when you laugh you feel a whole lot better. You may hold back sometimes from having a really good guffaw because you are worried about what people will think of you, but now research is showing that a good belly laugh can actually alleviate stress, help with depression, lower blood sugar and a myriad of other health benefits.

I recently read an article from CBS News that talked about all the benefits of laughter read it for yourself at :-) and stop taking yourself so seriously. Have fun with your kids, turn that frown upside down and be a kid yourself without worrying about the repercussions. Visit a playground with your little ones and try out all the playground equipment along with them. Life is too short to be serious all the time, so love and laugh and teach this attitude to your children. Who says we can't all be a kid sometimes and REALLY have fun.

Our good friend Cicero had the right idea when he said so eloquently "As I approve of a youth that has something of the old man in him, so I am no less pleased with an old man that has something of the youth. He that follows this rule may be old in body, but can never be so in mind."

"Praise" and Children

Positive Parenting Praise
Praising our kids is an essential part of building their self esteem- so it is worth thinking about in a little more depth.
Children are a lot smarter and more perceptive than we realize, so one important part of praise is that it must be HONEST. If you praise your child for a piece of homework that you don't really feel is very good, he will pick up from your tone of voice or your body language that you don't mean it. Save your praise for when you can give it fully and honestly.

Kids don't have the experience that we have and misunderstandings are easy to create. So praise that is SPECIFIC will help your child more than generalizations. Saying that you appreciated your child's help with the chores will mean more to him if you say exactly which bits of what he did were so helpful.
Children have a different perception of time than do adults. Praise is best served warm! When you see your child doing something great - tell him so as soon as you can, and keep your praise TIMELY. On the flip side, beware of giving constant praise when there is no reason for it. Your child will be more motivated if your praise is associated with genuine effort on his part, rather than appearing at random intervals no matter what he does.
Why not watch yourself as you praise your child today and see if you are managing to make your praise:
  • Honest
  • Specific
  • Timely

Rainy Days and Mondays :)

I woke up early this morning and looked out the window and it is raining and kind of blah. I didn't post yesterday because it was my Mom's 82nd birthday and also the Victoria Day long weekend so and a lot of my family came up for the auspicious occasion. I decided to visit with them and take the day off.

Even though it is a long weekend I am going to make sure to post today, as I know from experience that if I take too much time off of anything it is hard for me to get back on track again. That is the beauty about goal setting you decide on what you want to accomplish and you follow the steps you need to get to where you want to go - easy peasy lemon squeasy! Check out the goal ladder a fun " goal setting" aid for your children.

Soooo even though it is a rainy day and I would much rather crawl back into bed for a few more hours, I am going to resist the temptation and do a bit of work for the KidsGoals.com website. After all June is around the corner and I have set a goal to send out the next Newsletter and it's going to be GREAT!!!

So if you haven't signed up for it come by KidsGoals for a visit we would love to see you :)

Hey Mom and Dad Look What I can do :)

The internet just came back on after being down for almost a day and half, due to a broken cable. I felt so lost in the morning when I couldn't sign on and write my blog for the day, It started to become a very positive habit and I actually looked forward to blogging especially since I set a goal for myself to blog on a daily basis.

I just realized today, that when I complete today's post, I will have blogged for nineteen days and on some days, I even blogged twice -  Not too shabby!!! It proves that when you set your mind to do something you really want to do, anything is possible! I know this is just a small goal, but the beauty of accomplishing the smaller goals is that you gain the willpower to try something even more ambitious. Your confidence is boosted and you start to believe in yourself again and in your capabilities.

That is why goal setting is so important for children. I always stress the younger the better and there is a good reason for this, as how a child perceives himself starts very early in life. Each new milestone, such as learning to roll over or crawl, teaches a child about their own capabilities. They may fall over but they try again and again and then one day they actually succeed, but without acknowledgement from others for their persistence it really doesn't mean a lot. Research has shown that even if a child is pleased with his achievement, if he doesn't feel loved and appreciated for his efforts, he may still end up with low self esteem.

As adults we like to be acknowledged by the boss for our hard work or by our spouse if we stick to our diet and lose a few pounds, so why wouldn't a child need the same kind of adulation - something to think about!

Healthy Snack or Quick Brekkie Idea :)

We at KidsGoals believe it is important for you to try and make the foods that you give your children as healthy as possible. By teaching them at a young age that proper nutrition will help them to grow to their full potential and getting them to try a wide variety of different fruits and vegetables, you will have a better chance of them making smarter food choices as teens and finally as adults. Healthy food does not have to taste bad and by finding more nutritional foods that actually taste good you will prove this to your children. Snacks choices for our kids seems to be a place where we as parents could improve a bit.

Having a teen age boy I know full well that if I don't have something healthy at the ready after school he will find something not so nutritionally-sound to snack on. I know it takes a lot more energy to make something from scratch rather than just out of a box but it is well worth the effort. Processed food is laden with bad fats and high fructose corn syrup, so if possible make them a once in awhile treat, but not a daily habit. See the 80/20 rule! There are a myriad of recipes that are kid friendly as well as nutritionally sound, such as the power bar recipe that follows. Even better get your kids to help make up a batch after school. Kids love to cook with you and it is a perfect time to bond with your children. This also makes a great grab and go breakfast idea when you are running late in the morning :)

 HEALTHY ENERGY BARS
Ingredients (Preheat oven to 350 degrees)
1 1/2 cups rolled oats 1 cup crispy brown rice cereal
 1/4 cup sesame seeds
1 1/2 cups dried chopped apricots
1 1/2 cups raisins or dried cranberries, cherries or other dried fruit
1/2 cup protein powder ( I use micronized whey protein from the health food store)
 1/2 cup toasted wheat germ
1 cup brown rice syrup(found in most health food stores)
1/4 cup dark brown sugar or coconut sugar
1/2 cup peanut if not allergic, or other nut butter almond especially good
1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp butter to grease cookie sheet
Put oats cereal and sesame seeds in a flat pan or cookie sheet with sides and bake until nicely toasted approximately 15 minutes, once mixture cools remove from pan and put aside. Put raisins or other dried fruit choices and wheat germ, and protein powder in a large bowl and mix together with hands or wooden spoon, add toasted oats and sesame seeds and stir until well mixed. Put rice syrup, brown sugar and vanilla in heavy pot over medium heat and bring to boil, reduce heat to low and stir in vanilla and peanut butter or other nut butter. Quickly add to ingredients in bowl and stir together and immediately put on a lightly buttered cookie sheet. Press evenly into pan (wetting your hands will make this a lot easier) work quickly as mixture will set and make it difficult to spread evenly. Chill for at least four hours and then cut into 2x3 inch bars

Sugar Makes You Not So Smart :(

I blogged a few days ago about how exercise can actually make you smarter, but apparently a recent UCLA study with rats shows that a high fructose diet can not only make you gain weight, it can also cause memory loss, and impede learning, because it actually causes the brain to slow down.

"Our study shows that a high-fructose diet harms the brain as well as the body. This is something new," says Fernando Gomez-Pinilla, a professor of neurosurgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and a professor of integrative biology and physiology in the UCLA College of Letters and Science.

Something to think about for your kids since we are gearing up for the end of the school year meaning the dreaded EXAMS!!! The kind of sugar you should be concerned about is the high fructose corn syrup that food manufacturers seem to be putting into everything these days - so make sure to check those labels!!! Speaklng of Exams drop by and check out our study aids on the KidsGoals.com so your Kids can learn to work "Smarter not Harder" and while you are there sign up for our free newsletter :)

The Power of "Visualization" For Goal Setting!

At KidsGoals we are firm believers in the power of "visualization" to help kids and adults alike to realize their goals. We believe that if your mind's eye can see the prize, you are more likely to achieve your goal. As A.L. Linall, Jr. so aptly put it "Visualization and belief in a pattern of reality, activates the creative power of realization"

An easy exercise you can try if you want to , is to take a picture of an object and find a quiet place and really study the picture for ten minutes. It can be a picture of anything, even a bowl of fruit, or a picture of your family pet. Look at all the different things in the picture and then focus on one aspect of the picture, something specific. Look at the colours, shape and texture of the image and then close your eyes and open your eyes quickly over and over for about 30 seconds. Your mind will not be able to tell whether you are actually looking at the image or if you are imagining it. By practicing this you are teaching your mind to hold an image. If you want to teach your mind how to visualize with words, look at the image and then describe it verbally in as much detail as possible-that way you can develop your mind's ability to visualize with words. Since memories are images, sounds and sensations in your mind you can use your imagination to make up new experiences such as seeing your goal come to fruition. The hard part is keeping the image in your mind long enough so that you will accept it. Remember as with anything, practice makes perfect.

#1 Reason You Don't Achieve The Goals You Set!!!

I just sent a good friend of mine his daily inspirational quote and it gave me a bit of food for thought on what to blog about this morning. I chose the topic of "follow through" and gave the analogy of planting a seed in the ground and just walking away without watering it, making sure it is getting adequate sunshine, fertilizer etc. Now... the chances of that seed growing without a bit of attention are pretty much slim to nothing, so think about that when you set a goal for yourself.

The number one reason goals never become realized is follow through. We want to achieve a certain goal and we write down our intention and all the steps it takes to get where we want to go and then we get busy with life and well I am sure you know where I am going with this - the goal never gets to see the light of day!!! Follow through WILL get you the results you desire. Here is a quote by a widely respected and successful business women named Mary Kay Ash - the founder of Mary Kay cosmetics, that illustrates this point so beautifully :)

“Those who are blessed with the most talent don't necessarily outperform everyone else. It's the people with follow-through who excel.”

When Mary Kay was passed over for a promotion and it was given to a man that she had trained she decided to quit her job and write a book to help women like herself achieve success in business. Well, that book became a plan for her own successful business - the rest as they say is history.

Now Mary Kay would NEVER have become the success that she was had she not followed through with her plan. On that note here is a link on to "How to Overcome Procrastination" So set some goals and most importantly FOLLOW THROUGH with them. Make a plan with small steps to follow so you do not become overwhelmed and you WILL have success!!!  Also remember kids learn best by example so if you show them you have follow through they will follow suit.

Have an awesome Tuesday :)

Why is it that...?

Yesterday was Mother's Day in North America and it is supposed to be a day when your kids and possibly significant other treats you like the Queen you are. Yes it is a day of rest and possibly even a break from the cooking duties and of course flowers are a must!!! My kids usually tell me in no uncertain terms that it is also a day when I am to do absolutely anything I want but I am not allowed to do any of my usual duties. I was actually quite surprised at how hard it was for me to shut off my "Mother Mode" and just let the laundry sit for a day and not give a care if the dishes were piled in the sink for a few hours. I guess once we become Mothers there is just this need to look after everyone and everything...why is that??? Even though my kids were more than happy to do the chores I still found myself thinking about the beds that were unmade, or the fact that we were running low on clean towels... Anyway, just my thought of the day and also thought it was a good chance to link to an article on "How to Deal with Parenting Stress" so if there are some harried Mom's out there that could use a little TLC for themselves this is the place to get some great tips on how to de-stress and take care of that very important person YOU the caregiver :) Have an awesome Monday and come by and see us at KidsGoals and sign up for our free newsletter :)

Happy Mother's Day :)

Hey all you amazing Moms out there.

It is Mother's Day in North America and I am having a bit of a late start today as I languished in bed just a little longer than usual - how awesome was that!!! Anyway, the weather is gorgeous and I have been told by my kids in no uncertain terms I cannot do anything today!!! No worries there, I will follow those orders happily.

Just an update on yesterdays soccer game. The boys were amazing and were up by two goals in the first half and ended up losing 3-2 Not too shabby!!! It was so good for their morale as everyone keeps reiterating how unfair it is for them but...that did not deter them. Good lesson for all of us when we come across something that seems monumental at the time - perseverance will get you where you want to go - don't EVER give up!!!

Have an Awesome Day!!!

It's Supposed to be Fun!!!

Hey all!!

Well it is soccer day to day in beautiful BC and I am seriously debating on whether to go and watch my son's game. Because none of the evaluations of the players from last summer were turned in last year, the teams are extremely unbalanced. One team has most of the high caliber players and they have been annihilating every team that they play. Good for them, but what does that do to the confidence of the other teams that have to play them?

They came up with a plan that after five goals the next goals will not be counted unless the ball is passed five times before the next goal - but...

Any way the point of this is for the boys to be challenged, but not creamed and I wish we could start from square one and rearrange the teams. I know our team will only get better but the other team is pretty "cocky" about how good they are. While confidence is good - cocky, not so good :(

Got to hand it to our boys though they are trying their level best and giving 110% and keeping their heads held high - I guess we can all learn a little lesson from this about just do your best, and feel proud of yourself for not getting frustrated and giving up.

It will be interesting to see as the season unfolds how our boys will do, as coming up against such a formidable opponent can only make them better - all good!!!
Have an awesome Saturday and I will keep you posted... If you haven't done so yet drop by and sign up to the KidsGoals newsletter!!!

I Have an Attitude of Gratitude!!

I woke up this morning and the sky was blue and the sun was shining and I felt like all was right with my world-what an awesome feeling. I am soooo grateful for all of the help I had getting the website up and running. I have an amazing web guy and his perseverance and dedication made it happen.

I am getting great feed back from some of the readers and getting more likes on face book which is awesome. I have so many great ideas for the upcoming months centred on "goal setting for children" and also for adults. My goal was to get the new site up and running and having accomplished that I am over-the-moon happy!!

Exciting News!!!!!

Hello Valued Readers and KidsGoals.com subscribers!
I have been very busy since my last post working on the NEW and IMPROVED KidsGoals.com website. We are launching in a few days so  stop by for a visit as soon as I post the URL. The parenting blog will also be coming from the website and eventually this blog will be phased out.

If you have been a follower of the website and blog you are aware that Cassie, my dearest friend and partner in the website, passed away suddenly in December 2010 :( After a lot of contemplation I realized that I needed to continue with the website in her honour. It is what she truly would have wanted and I am honoured to do just that. So much exciting news to share about the launch and will keep you posted as we gear up for it.

You can also like us on Face Book and follow us on twitter now and will be able to share articles with your friends and family with a touch of a button. We are also going to offer more competitions in the near future with lots of GREAT PRIZES but you have to sign up for the free newsletter for entry.

So stay tuned for the exciting launch of the new KidsGoals.com
